Monte Cristo Panini

29 May

Have you ever had a Monte Cristo sandwich? There are many different variations of this sandwich (see wikipedia) but my favorite version is the one at Bennigans.

A Monte Cristo (Bennigans style) is basically meat and cheese stuffed french toast that has been fried. I wanted to make to the sandwich at home, but didn’t really want to fry it. How about a Monte Cristo Panini? It has taken me a few tries to make this Panini a success, but I think I have it down now.

Monte Cristo Panini

  • 2 pieces of white bread
  • 2 slices of lean turkey
  • 2 slices of lean ham
  • 1 slice of swiss cheese
  • 1 slice of yellow american cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • 2 Tablespoons strawberry jam (for dipping)

On one slice of bread, place the american cheese and turkey. On the other slice of bread, place the swiss cheese and ham. Put the sandwich slices together.

With a fork, whisk together the egg and milk. Dip the entire sandwich into the mixture and immediately put on a hot Panini press.

Let Panini cook until cheese is melted and the bread is golden brown. Dust with powdered sugar, slice, dip in strawberry jam and enjoy!
